Backyard additions always need to consider light, access, and view. In this case, we are proposing the covered outdoor space branch off the two story garage rather than the addition to create a courtyard, increase light at the addition, and provide the most function.
It also gives us something nice to look at from both spaces.

Let’s talk front porches and how they make a walkable street. In pre WW2 times before the advent of air conditioning and production housing developments most homes had porches for pragmatic reasons. These covered spaces offered cover from the summer sun with ventilation on multiple sides. Socially they provided a street facing outdoor room for less formal interactions. They were sized for habitable spaces not undersized appendages only for the sake of dressing up an elevation. Walking a street of homes with porches is an entire different experience than walking a street with front facing snout nose garages.
